Fifth International Symposium on Ocean
Wave Measurement and Analysis
Welcome
Join us in Madrid, Spain, 3rd-7th July 2005
for WAVES 2005, the Fifth International Symposium onOcean
Wave Measurement and Analysis. WAVES 2005 offers a special
opportunity for professionals, researchers, managers, and those with
interest in coastal and ocean wave measurement and analysisto meet,
exchange information, present views, and share case studies that
will promote communication and technology transfer, improve
design, wave climate statistics, theoretical hydrodynamics, and
practical solutions to many coastal challenges.
WAVES 2005 is the first in the series of successful specialized
conferences on ocean wave measure-ment to be held outside of the
United States. The previous symposium was held in San Francisco
in2001 and the First International Symposium on Waves was held in
New Orleans in 1974. Proceedingsfrom the series of WAVES symposia
are frequently cited references in the field.
WAVES 2005 is being organized by CEDEX with the support of the
Coasts, Oceans, Ports & RiversInstitute (COPRI) of ASCE to
include both offshore and coastal interests in wave measurement
andanalysis, as well as applications and short and long ocean
wave studies. CEDEX has devoted a tremendous amount of energy
for preparation of this event and COPRI is very excited about this
type ofinternational collaboration.
The presentations at the Symposium will cover, among other topics,
the integration of national andinternational networks for wave
measurements, the latest data related to extreme and freak
waves, wave action on structures and catastrophic damages generated
by waves on the coast. State of theart and cutting-edge innovations
– like SPH – on wave modeling as well as remote sensing of waveswill
be also presented.
The December 26th, 2004, Indian Ocean Tsunami has moved us to
incorporate specific sessions de-voted to the specific study of this
tragic event, covering field studies, physics of the phenomena,
effects and performance of coastal structures, lessons learned about
mitigation measures and warningsystems, which will improve our
knowledge and response readiness.
More than 240 oral presentations, along 4/5 parallel sessions, 30
posters, a technical exhibit, two preconference short courses, and
other events, will surely give WAVES 2005 participants
excellentopportunities to network with colleagues and exchange and
share knowledge. A special exhibit, ‘Iribarren: engineering and
sea’, presented and the Conference Venue, will give us the
opportunity tolearn and reflect on scientific coastal engineering
history.
After the Conference, an optional Technical Tour will take you
along the Basque Country Coast tovisit several important,
interesting and beautiful coastal sites that were studied and
developed by theoutstanding coastal engineer – Iribarren, and
provide you an opportunity to visit the famous Gug-genheim Museum in
Bilbao.
Join us for WAVES 2005 to take part in a confluence of ideas that
will improve your projects, career, and business, and, ultimately,
help advance the field of wave measurement and analysis. Bring
yourfamily and friends with you to participate in our Accompanying
Persons Program and join us in cap-turing the many charms of Spain!
