CEDEX has been conceived since its creation as an organization for high level technical assistance in the field of civil engineering and the associated environment.

This function is basically directed to provide the technical support requested by the Ministries of Fomento and Environment, that does not exclude the service given to other institutions, public and private, national or from abroad.

The technical support given materializes in concrete actions, developed under agreement by the different Centres and Laboratories of CEDEX, in the following fields:

• Harbours, coasts, estuaries; maritime engineering; quality and dynamics of littoral waters; dredging problems.
• Hydraulic planning; hydrology; engineering of continental waters; quality of the resource.
• Project, construction and exploitation of road networks; traffic engineering and road safety.
• Environmental engineering in its multiple facets of data acquisition, diagnosis, prevention and/or solution of problems under an specialized and multidisciplinar approach.
• Physics, electronics and computational analysis.
• Properties and applications of construction materials; materials science; studies and experimental analysis of structures.
• Geotechnical engineering: foundations; earth structures; soil and rock mechanics.
• Historic studies of public works and urbanism.

The results of these activities are collected in the Technical Reports of CEDEX. A copy of them is resident in the CEDEX Libraries Network, mostly in the Central Library.
